Visual/Senses: A Unique Exhibition Catalogue

Engaging Readers Through Sight and Smell

The Visual/Senses exhibition catalogue, designed by Jesvin Yeo, offers a unique sensory experience that combines the visual and olfactory senses. Inspired by the ambience of visiting a temple, this catalogue aims to evoke memories, spark imagination, and foster personal connections. With its specially created aroma ink and captivating design, it stands out as a remarkable example of editorial design.

The main objective of the Visual/Senses exhibition is to deliver a blast of nostalgia and familiarity, while also providing a shot of discovery for younger visitors. The exhibition catalogue plays a crucial role in achieving this aim by engaging readers through the senses of sight and smell. By recreating the atmosphere of a temple, it invites readers to take a second look at the overlooked and be transported to a world of cultural exchange.

What sets this exhibition catalogue apart is its innovative use of aroma ink. Working closely with scent company Jay Cee Global, Jesvin Yeo embarked on a five-month journey to create a scent that captures the essence of a temple. Various natural fragrance materials were experimented with until the perfect aroma was achieved. This essence was then mixed into the printing inks used to produce the catalogue, resulting in a truly immersive experience for readers.

In addition to the aroma ink, the Visual/Senses catalogue features 3D embossing on its cover to create a smoke effect. This technique adds depth and texture, enhancing the overall visual appeal of the design. The catalogue is also designed with traditional sewing, allowing for the addition of pages for future exhibitions and serving as exhibition posters. The photographs are printed on Morgen paper, providing a soft and gentle feel, while the use of pantone colors on the back of the pages helps to separate the different temples featured.

The Visual/Senses exhibition catalogue, with its meticulous attention to detail and unique sensory elements, is a testament to Jesvin Yeo's creativity and innovation. It not only captures the texture and beauty of traditional Chinese temples but also transports readers to a world of memories and imagination. Through its engaging design and thoughtful execution, this catalogue serves as a bridge between cultures, sharing the rich heritage of Chinese architecture and decoration with the world.

With its remarkable design and sensory experience, it comes as no surprise that the Visual/Senses exhibition catalogue was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2016. This prestigious accolade recognizes the outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill demonstrated by the design. It is a testament to the catalogue's ability to evoke positive feelings, amazement, and wonder in its viewers.

Visual/Senses is not just an exhibition catalogue; it is a work of art that stimulates the senses and sparks the imagination. It invites readers to embark on a journey of cultural exploration, where memories are evoked, new possibilities are imagined, and personal connections are forged.
